MINUTES Western Pima County Community Council
January 5, 2012

The meeting was called to order by outgoing Chair, Lil Jones, at 7:00 p.m. The Pledge was led by Carol Yokum and John Peck called the roll.

The Treasurer's Report was provided by Arlene Dreste. There is a balance of $1,267.58 on hand with one outstanding bill. Arlene asked for permission to pay the bill. The motion to pay was made, seconded, and passed.

Minutes of the last meeting have been prepared and are on file at the Library and on the Council web site, www.WPCCC.info.

OLD BUSINESS:
The new officers of the Board were introduced by the outgoing chair. They are:

There are existing vacancies on the Council and it was moved, seconded and passed that Paul Vasquez be appointed to District No. 1 and Ken Freese to District No. 2.

The outgoing Chair, Lil Jones then passed the gavel to the new Chair, Deb Morrow and she continued to preside over the meeting.

NEW BUINESS:
There was no new business to come before the Board.

SPEAKERS:
Brian MacKenzie, Principal at Ajo School, reported on the progress being made at the school with the help of the grant moneys received by Superintendent Dooley. He introduced Dr. Lauren Carrier who is working under this grant and said they had hired additional math and English teachers. They are working to insure that more students graduate and can see progress beginning to be made.

Aaron Cooper reported on the Job Training Program being initiated by ISDA. This program is planned for work force development and at present involves applicants from 18 to 45. Aaron can be reached at 520-238-2374.

Vickie Marshall from Pima Community Council was introduced and she told the audience she was available to answer any questions they might have about the school.

Bob Moreno introduced Aaron Cooper who provided information on the homeless situation in Ajo. The next meeting will be held at ISDA Programs office on January 11 at 5:30 p.m.

REGULARS:
Ken Freese introduced Lt. Clements who advised the audience that they have just received four new deputies and are almost at full strength. He was asked why the Sheriff's office seems to have the atmosphere and appearance of a fortress and Lt. Clements advised that the Sheriff's office was also used as a restraining or jail facility and safety of employees and inmates was involved in this construction. No other comments from regular attendees was received because of their absence. The Attorney assigned to the Ajo area was introduced.

MINUTE TO SPIEL

Jane Canon from Desert Senita Community Health Clinic reported on the hiring of another doctor bringing their staffing to three doctors, two P.A.s and a full compliment of nursing staff. They will start new office hours remaining open until 7:00 p.m. to accommodate working people. Emergency help is available until 11:00 p.m. each evening and on weekends by calling the Ambulance service. For further details on this, contact the Clinic. The annual Health Fair will be held on January 28th and the February Road Runner Rampage will be directed through the Cabeza Prieta.

Lil Jones reported on the work being done by the Ajo Arts Alive to promote the Centennial Celebration in February and distributed some new brochures providing more information on this project.

CALL TO THE FLOOR:
Sylvia Tatten Burris advised the group on the work being done to provide Ajo with a community radio station through use of the Internet. An attempt had been made for a regular FM station but the costs involved were prohibitive. The cost of an internet radio station is minimal. Additional information can be obtained through radioajo.org or by contacting Sylvia at sylvit@uw.edu. The proceeding of this meeting were recorded for later use on the radio station and future meetings will be recorded.

There being no further business to come before the Council, it was moved, seconded and passed that the meeting be adjourned.
