Minutes of the Meeting
February 4, 2010

The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Lil Jones at 7:p.m..

Pledge of allegiance led by Jimmie Lou Guzman.

Roll Call taken by Ernie Green. Present: Lil Jones, Debbie Morrow, Jimmie Lou Guzman, Ernie Green, and Arlene Dreste. Excused: Ken Freese, Chris Dimitrakopoulus, and Carol Yokum.

The minutes of the last meeting , January 7, 2010, were approved by the council and are available at the library and on our website at www.WPCCC.info.

Treasurer Report was tabled in the absents of the Treasurer.

OLD BUSINESS:

  1. Lil Jones reported one third of the needed signatures for the lighting district home owners have been collected. Door to door canvassing continues as well as two petition opportunities at Olsen’s on February 13 and 14. Completion is hoped by September. No final date has been set but all mercury vapor lights of APS will be turned off on January 1, 2011.

NEW BUSINESS: None noted.

SPEAKERS:

  1. Fatima McCasland, Director, Desert Senita Community Health Center was introduced. Reported dental center, completed January of 2009, is three times the size as the old and twice the dental chairs. A second dentist was also added in 2009. Thanks to stimulus funds a scheduler, medical assistant and dental assistant have been added. Money was also made available for capitol construction in 2009 and made possible the construction of the new pharmacy at the rear of the Senita. Completion, inspection, licensing and hiring of pharmacist Nona Reynolds allowed opening the end of January. Health plan contracting has been slow but continuing with the goal all residence plans will soon be on board. Thanks to Ajo Improvement and its providing a transformer upgrade for the pharmacy. Other funds will allow some remodeling, carpeting and painting. Future funds will be used for the purchase of a generator for power outages. It was noted by Nona Reynolds that prescription prices will be very competitive with program co-pays.

  2. Linda Lamb, Library Director, noted the hours and holiday schedule of the library. Lee Irwin is now part of the staff. Lecture schedule for February subjects include solar energy, water harvesting, landscaping, saving energy and green conservation. The monthly art exhibits are continuing.

  3. Sgt. Michael Seeley, Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Ajo District, was introduced for a short report. District is still three deputies short. Sgt. Seeley noted no further changes. It was asked if it is legal for RV’s to park along a curb and run electrical cords and hoses across public sidewalks to an adjoining residence. It was noted to call the Sheriff’s office to have a deputy check on it on a case by case basis. Vehicles parked in front of L3 Communications have been ordered to park in open area further north to keep Malacate clear. Appreciation noted.

  4. Deb Miller, Supervisor Sharron Bronson’s office, was called upon. Miller noted the contact person for the airport is in Tucson, Martin Stickford at 520-7400-6379, for hanger rental, etc.. The plan for a security fence for the airport is still going forward as it is a federal improvement program. Bronson will be in Ajo February 11th for her quarterly visit.

  5. Devin Reno, Border Patrol Public Relations Officer, Ajo Station was introduced by Deb Morrow. Traffic at the border is increasing. Agents have encounters and apprehensions of larger groups and narcotics seizures. The Tucson Sector predicts a record year for narcotics again this year. The Secure Border surveillance fence south of Ajo is in full swing. Explained towers contained radar, cameras, and communication elements. The activity will continue for an extended time at the storage yard, north of the health center, while towers and equipment are being erected.

FROM THE FLOOR:

  1. Mike Mekelburg noted that the General Services Administration postponed their public meeting from February to sometime in March.

  2. It was suggested that a speaker from the Census Bureau be arranged.

On the motion of Deb Morrow, seconded by Ernie Green, the meeting was adjourned by the Chair, Lil Jones at 7:35 p.m..
