Roll Call taken by Debbie Morrow. Present: Chris Dimitrakopolus, Lil Jones, Debbie Morrow, Jimmie Lou Guzman, Ernest Green and Ken Freese. Excused: Carole Yokum and Arlene Dreste. Quorum attained.
The minutes of the last meeting, December 3, 2009, were approved by the council and are available at the library and on our website at www.WPCCC.info.
Treasurer Report was given by Ken Freese. Reported $1,578.80 as present bank balance.

Lt. Clemens, Ajo District Pima County Sheriffs Office introduced by Ken Freese. It was noted the holiday season was quiet. Using Operation Stonegarden funds from Homeland Security continues to allow overtime and cooperation between the various law enforcement agencies. Presently short two officers that for the present will not be replaced due to funding. No cutbacks are planned for the Ajo office.
Devon Reno, Public Relations Officer, U.S. Border Patrol introduced by Chris Dimitrakopolus. The border has also been quite, but it usually picks up after new years. The Tucson Sector, includes Ajo, has seized 40% more narcotics this year over last. This sector has seized 1.2 million pounds, 47% of all drugs seized along the border.
It was noted the more drug smuggling increases, the illegal immigration decreases. They are used to lure border patrol away from smuggling pathways. Reno noted the personal loads of drugs range from 40 to 60 pounds. Regarding the Secure Border Initiative Network the placement of towers is progressing with Ajo 1. Organ Pipe and planning of Ajo 2 is progress.
Al Kulwin, Pima County Community Development Block Grant Department introduced by Ernie Green. Kulwin explained how the grant program could benefit low to medium income areas. Funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the funding cycle for 2010 is in progress. Ajo has profited well in the past, noting the sidewalk project, skate park, and others. Ajo is sure to obtain projects, if applied for. The deadline is February 6. The weatherizing program continues due to additional stimulus funds.
