OLD BUSINESS:
NEW BUISNESS:
FROM THE FLOOR: The question of the GSA activity at 55 Sahuaro, property owned by Jim and Schneider, as noted in the Copper News was raised. Mike Mekelburg noted he would seek more information. Deb Miller noted she would check with Supervisor Bronson and other appropriate offices in Tucson.
SPEAKERS:
Simon Herbert, Pima County Cultural Affairs and Historical Preservation Office was introduced by Lil Jones. Herbert detailed the present status of the train depot in the plaza. Two handouts were distributed (see attached in library). One a layout plan for the building (dated 7-22-08) and possible uses for the areas. The second a funding report showing a total of $600,000 and an approximate schedule of activity suggesting a completion date of September 2011. As the building was originally a train depot it qualified for an Arizona Transportation Enhancement Grant, among others. Environmental assessment is now underway and must conform to National Parks Service regulations. It was noted the move of the Chamber is not decided. It was suggested the train car pictured should be included for visual interest and possibly used for lectures.
Sgt. Tom Holz, Ajo District Pima County Sheriffs Department was introduced by Ken Freese. Complaints were noted regarding traffic running/disregarding traffic signal in the plaza. It is not possible to station a deputy and car there. Would look into possibly stationing an unmanned car in the area. Will alert deputies to take more note of the area. Complained deputies have passed with lights and siren, suddenly lights would go off. Most likely call was cancelled. A complaint was noted regarding pound parking. For the next few days parking on that side of building would not be allowed for safety reasons due to the installation of the sewer lines. Parking is available at MVD and in front of the sheriffs office.
Deb Miller, Supervisor Bronson’s office, was introduced by Ernest Green. Miller noted several brochures regarding County programs regarding home weatherization, home repair and related programs. Miller announced her schedule changes. Starting in February she will come to the Community Center prior to WPCCC meetings to meet with people who have county problems, questions, or concerns.
Devon Reno, Public Relations Officer, U.S. Border Patrol was introduced by Chris Dimitrakopoulus. In the last few days, with infrared camera, two separate trucks containing 4,000 pounds of marijuana were confiscated. This year the Tucson area has confiscated 1.2 million pounds of marijuana, the most ever of any district. Weather is better and traffic is increasing. The Border Patrol "is getting it done". Regarding the towers: they will be located closer to the border than to Ajo. The towers, with radar, camera, telecommunication, etc., will be located in areas normal patrol is extremely difficult. One third of all drug confiscations is done at check points.
CALL TO THE FLOOR:
Carol Peek, Ajo Community Golf Course, was called upon by the Chair. All Ajo projects have been removed for 2010. The $350,000. is to save golf course structures and infrastructure. An appeal for inclusion is being prepared. A letter of support is requested from the WPCCC. The motion to support the appeal, made by Chris Dimitrakopoulus, seconded by Carol Yokum, was passed unanimously.
It was announced by the Chair that Carol Yokum #4- Gibson, Jimmie Lou Guzman #6-Why, Ernie Green, #8-At Large, and Arlene Drieste, #10-At Large, were elected.
On the motion by Carol Yokum, seconded by Ernest Green, the meeting was adjourned by the Chair at 8:p.m..
