OLD BUSINESS:
New Lighting District: Lil Jones noted the cost of the district would be less than the amount noted in the recent APS letter. The amount of the grant, $43,000, would be deducted from that amount and the assessment would be based on that amount.
It was asked who then would own the lights. That would be APS, plus lines and electrical use. No further questions. Jones noted signing meetings would be arranged to gather needed signatures.
NEW BUISNESS:
SPEAKERS:
Fran Driver, a public health nurse with Pima County, was introduced by Chris Dimitrakopoulus. The Community Response Committee was discussed. The group has had the responsibility for writing an emergency plan for Western Pima County bringing law enforcement, health care providers, and services to respond to a local event such as the recent power outage. Much information was obtained by the successes and challenges during the outage. Such as insufficient generator power in areas and the need for generators in others, i.e. the health center. The difficulty of getting the aged, ill, or distant residents to the shelter was highlighted. Carol Yokum noted Ajo Transportation closed down stranding many. Volunteers and enforcement officers filled the gap.
Nina Altshul of Ajo CSA, a community supported agriculture program, was introduced by Jimmie Lou Guzman. The group purchases locally grown produce in Phoenix and each participant receives a weekly share. Weekly newsletters bring recipes, information and activities. Members do demos of solar cooking and food education. Contact at www.ajo@.com or call 387-3132.
Todd Whitwer, Allwyn Environment, was introduced by Carol Yokum. His subject regarded the Pima County proposal to identify hazardous or petroleum pollution on properties in Ajo, Why, and Lukeville, primarily along Highway 85. The Brownfield Grant application goal is to stimulate private or public redevelopment of abandoned or neglected properties. The value of these cleanup assessments could cost $2,500 to $5,000 each parcel. This fee will be waved by the County to encourage owners to sell for redevelopment. Sight suggestions would be appreciated. Sights of long ago activity would be welcomed. A public meeting will be forth coming.
Lt. Clements, Pima County Sheriffs Department was introduced by Ken Freese. Clements noted no meth is produced locally due to the cost and difficulty of buying ingredients. Locally those selling are getting attention five or six at a time, thanks to the tip line. The power outage and emergency activity. Regarding the emergency shelter at the Ajo school gym had a problem. Told the generator would be sufficient, but found not to be. A second generator was lent by the Border Patrol and worked well. A second generator is being sought. The community may call 387-8539 for outage information. It was noted a deputy rolled and totaled his sheriffs car. He is OK. If patrol cars seem to be lined up or bunched up, wait a few minutes. If they don’t disburse call 387-8539.
Deb Miller, Supervisor Bronson’s office was unable to attend this evening.
Devon Reno, Border Patrol agent and new Public Information Officer, was introduced by Jimmie Lou Guzman. After a short personal introduction, noted the new arch at the checkpoint on Hwy 85. It helps a great deal with the sun and gives prominence to the checkpoint. It was noted the new surveillance towers were in process of installation.
Mimi Phillips, ISDA extended an invitation to all to come and enjoy the Day of Peace celebration. It will be a two day affair with many events and performances.
