SPEAKERS:

  1. Chris Dimitrakopoulus introduced Dr. Lou Albert, President, West Campus Pima County College, who, with Vice President Nancee Sorenson, Dean Mary Beth Ginter and assistant Dionne White shared the Power Point presentation for on line registration, college directory of on line classes, etc.. A year ago a need for GED testing was identified. A third date is in the works. Noted: A group of Ajo art students visited the west campus for Arts Day.
  2. Lil Jones introduced Greg Gibson, US Border Patrol. Local agents have noted a rise in illegal border crossing and drug smuggling. Due to the activity there have been more rescues. Ajo residents calling reporting activities have been of great help. Regarding questions: When apprehended are assessed for any medical needs, taken to the Ajo station, given food and water, processed, then sent to Tucson, and from there returned to their country of origin.

If being flagged down on the road or as a request at your door, it should be handled by calling the Border Patrol. Personal safety is of first priority. When in doubt, call.

  3. Debbie Morrow recognized Sgt. Tom Holz of Pima County Sheriffs Ajo District. In response to unknown people coming to the door or waving you down call 911. There is a criminal element as well as those coming and looking for work. Safety is paramount. Lock your doors.

  4. Lil Jones and members of the council encouraged all to join a committee or club and be a contributing member of our town. The Country Club/Golf Course, special events through the year: fiddlers, vaudeville, quilt show, mine overlook, museum, and so much more. All need volunteers.

  5. Lil Jones recognized Fred Fout, Principal of Ajo schools. Fout noted the combined educational efforts of Ajo High School and Pima Community College. Sighting GED testing, Advanced Placement opportunities, and on line instruction for high school or college credit. It is hoped that the school budget will not be hurt due to small school deferment

FROM THE FLOOR:

  1. Question. With homelessness becoming a part of Ajo due to repossessions, what can be done. Contact local churches or DES.

Meeting was closed by the Chair Lil Jones, at 8:00 pm, on the motion by Debbie Morrow, seconded by Chris Dimitrakopoulus.
