The program is sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation. The purpose is to encourage home owners and businesses to provide food, clean water, nesting opportunities and other items for the stimulation of wild life. Sartori is forming a committee to encourage the Ajo community to join in the effort. There is only one “Wildlife Habitat” in the state. A membership form/worksheet and fifteen dollars makes you a member. An additional 15 dollars will supply a sign to place on your gate. An application for a grant to cover the signs is in progress. A sample membership form is attached to the minutes at the Library. (Copy, do not take.) Anna Lopez of Pima County noted Parks and Recreation office in Tucson has a nursery with native plants
- Lil Jones introduced Sgt. Gary Chatham, Pima County Sheriffs Office for some questions and answers. There was a firearms alert near the school. After a grounds search order was resolved. On another incident a man was arrested in regards to an arson fire set to cover a robbery. Local drug activity appears to be down after a busy season. A drug detection dog has been added to the department and is under going further training. Ajo school is supposed to have an on premises officer. Due to understaffing only patrol checks are possible. When the six new officers arrive in November or so, this could remedy that short fall. It was noted the senior center has had several beak-ins. The doors have been reinforced and windows replaced. Other incidences were noted.
- Lil Jones introduced Fred Fout, Principal, Ajo School. Fout complemented Sgt. Chatham and the Sheriffs on there quick action at the school regarding the weapons incident. Fout noted the many Homecoming activities from floats to dances. The AVID program is of special interest for faculty and those middle-of-the-road students. Especially those who need exposure to higher education with college visits. JTED classes continue to interest students, such as culinary arts and auto shop, etc. New drafting boards and additional professional cooking equipment noted. Miss Fout elaborated on the excitement of Homecoming.
- Deb Miller was called upon by Lil Jones. Miller reported that Sharron Bronson will be in town October 28th with representatives from County Services at the Lyons Club. Miller also mentioned plans are underway for a County hazardous waste clean up.
