UNFINISHED BUISINESS:

  2. Lil Jones reported the block grant for street lights had been turned down. She is continuing the effort to form a “lighting district”.
  3. John Wyatt reported the management agreement with Pima County has been signed and in the mail. Wyatt noted one of the transformers will be returned for use at the arena. Possibly later mounted on a trailer to be used elsewhere in an emergency.

SPEAKERS

  1. Deb Morrow introduced Sharon Vaughn, “Out Reach” representative from the Cabeza Prieta Wildlife Preserve. Viewed twenty minute DVD with the history, divisions, goals, functions, and challenges as well as samples of protected animals of the Wild Life Preserves nation wide. Displayed national map illustrating the divisional areas of the Wild Life districts. The Sonoran Pronghorn sheep propagation program of the Cabeza Prierta was discussed. The successful program produced 25 young this past season.

A program for six Ajo youth will begin this next week. The program is to stimulate interest in joining the service later in life.

The area is now closed for the three month period for propagating.

Air Force permits for Goldwater viewing does not include the wider inclusion of pronghorn breeding area. It was noted the DNA of the Sonoran Pronghorn sheep, when compared to the pronghorn of Colorado, show it to be a sub species of pronghorn.

  2. Faye Miller introduced Gary Chatham, speaking for Sheriffs Department. It was asked, if enrolled in the vacant house program, how often is the house checked. It was noted the houses are physically checked 2 to 3 times a month. If gates are locked, visually checked only. When on patrol, the houses are observed when in the patrol area. Check is done at any time of day or night. Suggest enlisting neighbors to be aware and call sheriff if in question.

It was noted petty crime and drunkenness seems to be on the rise. It was noted school is out and this seems to happen. Be observant and call the sheriff.

It was noted some areas are seeing strange cars coming and going. Suggest trying to get plate numbers or car info. Be observant and call sheriff.

Are there crack houses in Ajo? Yes, several are being observed. Witnesses are hard to find. It takes time to make a case. There are two presently awaiting trial.

  3. Lil Jones introduced Captain Tibbitt of the Ajo Volunteer Fire Department. It was noted that volunteer donations are down. It is difficult to stay ahead of bills. Thanks to the Copper News for running, adds as more did come in. More donations are needed. There is one account with funds. They are for repairs, when they happen they are in the thousands. Donations should note “for the fire department”.

Regarding Fireworks: A local business has made a donation and has helped greatly. $1,600.00 still needed. Donation should be marked “Fireworks Fund”.

Regarding the “Fire District Formation”: It is still in the works. Submitted information was incorrect. “District boundaries” has not been properly defined. If formed, taxes would go up $60 to$80 dollars, insurance may come down, and at first the station would not be manned 24/7 as previously suggested.

Colored hydrants noted: Ajo Improvement-RED. Arizona Water-YELLOW. Five Acre Water-SILVER. Black-DEAD. Note: Those hydrants in Phase #One of the water replacement project have bee replaced and working.

Phase #2 has been postponed to April to include the new sewer system replacement at the same time.

OUR NEXT GENERAL MEETING: September 4, 2008. As there was no further business before the floor, the Chairperson, Lil Jones adjourned the meeting at 8:10 PM.
