Minutes of the Meeting
February 7, 2008

Meeting was called to order by Chairman Lil Jones at 7:PM.. Word of welcome.

Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ken Freese.

Roll was taken by Ernest Green. Present: Lil Jones, Ken Freese, Carol Yokum, Deb Morrow, Chris Dimitrakopoulous, Faye Miller, John Wyatt, and Ernest Green.

Treasurers report was given by Ken Freese.

The minutes were accepted by the Council and are available at the Library or on the web site, www.WPCCC.info.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
1. Correspondence: Hon. Jan Kearney expressed her appreciation for the input, suggestions, and feed back concerning the change to Ajo Superior Court sessions being transferred to Tucson due to budget restraints. Regarding Jury Duty: If you get a summons, immediately write a complete expression of hardship on you personally. To try, don’t wait. Excused is difficult to obtain.

NEW BUSINESS:
1. Connie Villaverde, Sonoran Desert Alliance, spoke on the creation of the community garden consortium being created south of the Curley elementary school area. A vegetable garden for demonstration and education. It is hoped the 3000 plus square feet garden will be just a beginning. Those items procured for the adult center will be moved and used at the garden,

SPEAKERS:
1. Lt. Clements reported the station is short staffed at present due to field training. Two new deputies will soon graduate and will be reporting. He noted there have been reports of prowlers at Curly. If in doubt Call 911. Sheriffs Auxiliary Volunteers now have an inkless finger print machine. Prints are acceptable for most legal requirements. Local orientation for new deputies was questioned. Noted that each are given a notebook on their arrival in Ajo. If needed, they will read it again, Please contact his office. Trash placed in ally ways questioned. Report action to Sheriffs office as it is “illegal dumping” by County ordinance.

2. Alex Harper, Border Patrol, reported alien traffic is down 50%. 5.2 miles of new fencing at Lukeville in process. A new maintenance building is nearing completion in Why. It was asked if headlights were adjusted after lift kits were installed. The matter would be checked.

3. Dr. Louis Albert, president of Pima County Community College West Campus spoke seeking community interest and involvement in a learning center in Ajo.

Dr. Albert gave a vivid description of the college, being the eighth largest in the country with seven campuses and 75,000 students and its extensive course offering. Courses here could be taught live or on line. Not only would they look for students but possible adjunct faculty among the retired, etc. (forms are available at the high school.) It was suggested the two first questions would best be found by survey. AJO copper News was identified and Mike Mekelburg was introduced. A suggested place for such a project was Curly School and ISTA should be contacted.. It was also noted that the college offers advanced placement classes and cooperative education courses.

4. Faye Miller introduced Lee Baisa, Director of Organ Pipe National Monument. Who reported the Mountain Loop, Alamo Canyon, and North Blanco are now open. Available are Patio Talks, Local artist displays, Interpretive talks, etc.. There is a volunteer cleanup planned. He is most interested in identifying the Ajo area as “GATEWAY TO ORGAN PIPE NATIONAL MONUMENT!!”

5. Deb Miller of Supervisor Bronson’s office announced the “State of the County Luncheon” is April 18, 2008 at 11:3O in Tucson.

6. Cliff Hunter, President of the skateboard Club, announced the slab for the skateboard park has been completed and the equipment will be installed beginning next Monday. Also here to inform all that the drive to raise $5,000.00 for fencing had exceeded the goal thanks to everyone….but more would be appreciated.

On the motion of Carol Yokum, seconded by Chris Dimitrakopoulous, the meeting was closed by Chair Lil Joes at 8:30 pm.
